Welcome to First Grade!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to First Grade!  This first month back to school is flying by, and we have been working hard on learning class routines and rules, ways to make friends and show kindness, and how to show respect at school, home, and in our community.  We also were very excited to meet our new buddies in fourth grade!  They surprised us with a fun visit and made thoughtful cards/invitations to our first buddy lunch.

Open House will be on Wednesday, September 27th from 6:00-7:30PM. I hope to meet you all soon and truly look forward to helping your child learn and grow this year!  My goal is for each child to love first grade, make many new memories, and succeed by meeting his/her academic potential this year.  Please know that I am excited to work together and plan to be in contact with you often throughout the year!  I also welcome parent volunteers, so if you're available and interested in helping out in our classroom, please be sure to sign up at Open House!

Finally, some upcoming events you will want to put on your calendars are as follows:

October 5th:   Field Trip to Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards  (9:30-1:00)
October 6th:  Grandparents'/Special Persons' Day  (AM)
October 9th:  No School  (Columbus Day)
October 13th:  School Walk-A-Thon  (10:25-11:05)
October 31st:  Halloween Parade & Class Party  (PM)

Creating a Caring Classroom Community!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to First Grade!  I am very excited to get to know you all and work closely with you this year!  Throughout our school year, we will be working to build community within our classroom through a variety of fun activities and projects.  During our first week of school, students worked together to create a class spiderweb with yarn!  The kids needed to use teamwork, patience, and good listening skills to be successful.  The children each said their name and why they were special, and then took turns passing the yarn to create a web.  Everyone learned that we all must work together to help each other succeed, and that if we don't, we would have a huge mess and lots of problems.  Once the web was built, it was lots of fun to lift it up in the air to see our web underneath!  Great work, First Graders!

Just a reminder, that our Open House night is tomorrow, September 28th, from 6:00-7:30.  I hope to see you all there!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Carie Gregory

Learning About Abraham Lincoln!

Dear Parents,

It's hard to believe that June is already here and summer is just around the corner!  Our students recently worked very hard to research facts and learn more about the life and history of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln for our annual Bridgeport Festival.  This year, our theme was "Stepping Back in Time With Character!"  First grade taught the word of "Respect" through a wonderful presentation about Mr. Abe Lincoln.  They made posters, read facts for our school, and made cute top hats with black beards, just like what Abe wore! It was a great assembly during the day and fun- yet very windy, festival at night!  We hope you enjoy our pictures from the day, and that you and your family had a nice time at the festival, too.  It was wonderful to see so many of you that night!  Thanks so much for your continued support, and enjoy the great weather ahead this summer!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Carie Gregory

Bushels of Fall Fun!

Dear Parents,

Wow! What a busy month October was in our classroom!  We celebrated Grandparent's Day, had a visit from our new Buddy Class from BOCES, enjoyed a wonderful field trip to Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards, learned all about fire safety, made applesauce with Miss Ellie, and had a fun Halloween parade and party together!

Academically, our day and schedule has also changed with the addition of "WIN TIME" for our school and district.  This month, our students focused on the ELA target skills of learning to form all lower-case letters correctly, knowing their Kindergarten sight words fluently, and being able to read CVC words, independently.  We were very pleased with the results that we are beginning to see in our classes because of this 30 minute teaching session each day!  Specifically, students made a lot of progress in their handwriting.  Please continue to have your child practice these skills at home so they can keep applying what they have learned during their mornings.  Our next "WIN TIME" session will focus on the Math target skills of knowing and writing numbers in correct sequence to 20 or higher, correct number formation, and addition & subtraction facts fluent to 5.

Thank you all again for your continued help and support at home with the "Books-in-the-Bag" Reading Homework each night!  The kids have loved choosing new books each day and their reward of reading to a Kindergarten friend!  I look forward to sharing more about your child's progress, thus far, during our Parent-Teacher Conference Day on Monday, November 16th.  See you soon!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Gregory
